ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT:
Franz Xaver Kroetz was born in Munich, West Germany in 1946, the son of a government tax official. He grew up in Bavaria and worked as an actor in the sixties, taking minor roles in small theatres, including Rainer Werner Fassbinder's antitheater. Game Crossing, his first play, was written in 1968 whilst his two one-act plays, Stubborn and  Working at Home premiered in 1971 at the Munich Kammerspiele. Working at Home was acclaimed as "the most important play of 1971" by Theatre Heute, although the accompanying scandal caused the theatre to be placed under police protection. Over the next few years Kroetz wrote a series of plays, the most successful of which is Stallerhof (1972). By 1973 Kroetz was Germany's most performed living playwright. He joined the Communist Party (DKP) in 1972, but left in 1980. Three seminal plays followed: The Nest (1974), Through the Leaves (1976), and Mensch Meier (Tom Fool, 1977). In the eighties Kroetz turned to acting and directing, achieving celebrity in the TV hit Kir Royale. His recent play, Das Ende der Paarung premiered in 2000 at the Berliner Ensemble directed by Claus Peymann.
